The cost of applying for planning permission in England is more than one fee. Separate the council's application charge from the cost of drawings, submission services and any specialist evidence. That makes competing quotes easier to compare.
How much is the council application fee?
The amount depends on the application category, proposal and any applicable exemption or concession. An extension, a new dwelling and a proposed lawful development certificate should not automatically be budgeted at the same rate.
Planning fees are updated annually. Use the government's current fee schedule and read the official fee guidance before submission. Check the effective date instead of relying on a price quoted in an older article.
What should a design quote include?
Ask the provider to identify the drawings and services included, who submits the application and how revisions are handled. Record whether a measured survey, application forms and officer correspondence are covered.
Keep separately priced items visible. Supporting reports, specialist surveys, application service charges and later construction information can change the total. Ask when each payment becomes due, rather than comparing only the headline drawing price.

Does permitted development mean there are no costs?
Work may qualify without a planning application, but you may still need design information or choose to obtain a lawful development certificate. Some rights require prior approval. Establish the route through the permitted development checker before comparing application costs.
What happens to the fee after refusal?
A refusal does not normally result in a council application fee refund. Refund rules have particular conditions; check the official guidance rather than treating the fee as a deposit for permission.
